If you use Tumblr and have been following the news, you know that Marissa Mayer has been Yahoo’s CEO for almost two years and in that time she has been busy improving many of Yahoo’s websites and apps. Also, Yahoo bought Tumblr a little over a year ago for $1.1 billion.
It probably seemed like a good idea at the time. But now, this purchase isn’t looking so good. Things are not all rosy over at Tumblr. According to a ComScore report in the Wall Street Journal, traffic to Tumblr has dropped from a peak of 49 million visitors in December to only 42 million in March.
Uh, yeah, that is a stunning loss of users in a very short time. If these numbers are accurate, this loss of 7 million visitors is a 15% drop. The thing is, there isn’t any obvious reason for this decline. Since Yahoo bought it, Yahoo hasn’t done much to change Tumblr, wanting to stay true to its promise to not ruin Tumblr. Yahoo has tried to monetize Tumblr and has been struggling, so this is really bad news for the company.
